Upgrade guide of OpenLM Version 1.5.4 to Version 1.5.5 PDF Print E-mail
OpenLM version 1.5.5 features major changes in the database structure and because of that we recommend our customers to perform a preliminary upgrade test before actually performing the upgrade on your production system.

The level of the preliminary check depends on the organization's requirements. If the requirement is to provide a 24/7 service then a full check is recommended that includes an installation of a test system and a full upgrade and testing of the test system. If a possible down time is acceptable then a short DB upgrade test may be sufficient. OpenLM customers are welcomed to contact our support team and consult us about upgrade issues.

Since there are many changes in the database structure, the upgrade procedure may take some time to run, depending on you database size. In testings we did here the whole procedure took less then 5 minutes with a 170 MB Firebird database (OpenLM Embedded database). Faster execution times were achieved with Oracle or MS SQL Server. Another major change in version 1.5.5 is the switch to LightTPD instead of SHTTPD as a temporary HTTP server distributed with OpenLM. LightTPD is very fast and it starts as service after the installation of OpenLM so it can be used as OpenLM EasyAdmin web server in your production environment. If you already installed OpenLM EasyAdmin to be served by your web server then we recommend you to continue and us it. If SHTTPD is used then please stop it from running before running the installation of version 1.5.5.

Version 1.5.5 contains two types of EasyAdmin interfaces, the original Flash based interface and the new HTML/Javascript one. The start menu OpenLM Program Group contains a links to both the Flash and the new EasyAdmin interface. The Flash interface is still supported in version 1.5.5 in order to fill gaps that may exist in the first versions of the new EasyAdmin interface.

OpenLM Log Reader is now called OpenLM Broker and includes a lot of new functionality. If you already have a working installation of OpenLM Log Reader there is no need to upgrade it. If you have not yet installed OpenLM Log Reader we highly recommend to install OpenLM Broker on each of your license servers.

The Agent software was also upgraded to support the collection of the value of environment variables (Usually FLEXlm LM_PROJECT) from end users workstations. There is also a new dedicated tool for ESRI Desktop ArcGIS users so if you intend to use one of these features the upgrade of the Agents on users workstations is also recommended.

There are two different procedures. One for installations that use the embedded Firebird database and another one for installations that use external database (Oracle, MS SQL Server or Firebird Server).

The software can be downloaded from our downloads area.

In this document we will describe the full preliminary check procedure. The short procedure is much simpler, depending on your system configuration.

Short preliminary check procedure for embedded database

First stage: Backup your database file!

Navigate to the location of your OpenLM Server database file, typically: C:\Program Files\OpenLM\OpenLMServer\db\OPENLM_DB.GDB and backup the database file.

Note that backup stage is mandatory since the database upgrade process can be sensitive to hardware and software problems. Starting the upgrade process without backing up your database file is risking your data.

Second stage: Test the database upgrade process (optional)

Choose a test workstation  (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and take the following steps:
  • Install OpenLM Server version 1.5.5 on a workstation.
  • Stop "OpenLM Server" windows service (on the workstation).
  • Copy of your production database C:\Program Files\OpenLM\OpenLMServer\db\OPENLM_DB.GDB to the test workstation.
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\OpenLM\OpenLM Server\bin and execute DBUpgrade.exe.
  • Upgrade your database and make sure that no errors are reported.

Now you can upgrade your production system.

Short preliminary check procedure for external databases

First stage: Backup your database!

Note that backup stage is mandatory since the database upgrade process can be sensitive to hardware and software problems. Starting the upgrade process without backing up your database file is risking your data.

Second stage: Upgrade your database

  • Download the appropriate database upgrade script from OpenLM Downloads area.
  • Stop OpenLM Server service and then Run the appropriate upgrade script in order to upgrade the database.
  • Make sure that no error messages are reported.

Now you can upgrade your production system.

Full Upgrade procedure with preliminary check for sites that use Firebird embedded database

Choose a test workstation  (XP, Vista or Windows 7) and take the following steps:
  • Install OpenLM Server version 1.5.4 (the exact version you currently use) on a workstation (XP, Vista or Windows 7).
  • Stop "OpenLM Server" windows service (on the workstation).
  • Replace the database with a copy of your production database C:\Program Files\OpenLM\OpenLMServer\db\OPENLM_DB.GDB.
  • Start "OpenLM Server" windows service.
  • Upgrade the system by installing OpenLM Server 1.5.5 on the workstation.

Test the new installation.

Third stage: Make sure your database backup is in safe place and upgrade your production system.

Upgrade is simple - install the new 1.5.5 package on your production server. It will update the software and upgrade your database. OpenLM service will not be available during the upgrade process.

Forth stage: Update OpenLM Agents.

Older OpenLM Utilizer Agent versions can work with OpenLM Server 1.5.5. There is no urgent need to upgrade utilizer agents but upgrade have to be done if you intend to use the new environment variable reporting functionality.

OpenLM Agent 1.5.5 for ESRI ArcGIS includes a new end user tool so upgrade is recommended but not mandatory. It you intend to use the new functionality for Project Reporting upgrade has to be done.

OpenLM supports different distribution methods: Start up scripts, Network management systems like CA Unicenter, Microsoft SMS or others.

Fifth Stage: Install OpenLM Broker on the any FLEXlm server you may have.

If OpenLM Log Reader is not already installed yet then download OpenLM Broker and install it on each license server. It will allow your system to report license denials and to provide more accurate reports.
If it is already installed you don't have to upgrade it.

OpenLM Broker needs to be installed on the FLEXlm server. Using the new configuration tool that is supported on Windows platforms makes the installation and configuration very easy. Please check the configuration guide.

Full Upgrade procedure with preliminary check for sites that use external database
This procedure is relevant to users that configured an external database with OpenLM Server. OpenLM Server supports Oracle, Ms SQL Server or Firebird server.

Note that backup stage is mandatory since the database upgrade process can be sensitive to hardware and software problems. Starting the upgrade process without backing up your database file is risking your data.

Second stage: Upgrade your database

Download the appropriate database upgrade script from OpenLM Downloads area.
Stop OpenLM Server service and then Run the script in order to upgrade the database.

Third stage: upgrade your production system.

Upgrade is simple, install the new package 1.5.5 on your production server. It will update the software while preserving all your settings. OpenLM service will not be available during the upgrade process.

Test the system!
