Migrating OpenLM Server to a new machine – KB4034

This document describes the procedure required to migrate OpenLM Server to a new machine while preserving existing license usage information. Procedures are described for both cases: when migrating to a new machine with the same version of OpenLM Server or migrating to a new machine and upgrading to a higher version of Server (e.g. from 4.X.X.X to 5.X.X.X).

1. Migrating between machines while maintaining the current OpenLM Server version

1. Find out the hostname and MAC address of the new OpenLM Server machine. Send this information to support@openlm.com. OpenLM Support will provide you with a license file for the new machine.

2. On the old machine, go to Windows Services and stop the “OpenLM Server” service.

3. Save a backup of the OpenLM server database to a safe place. Embedded Firebird databases are usually located at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenLM\OpenLM Server\db

If using an external database, please consult your system administrator for the location.

4. Install the same OpenLM Server version on the new machine (contact OpenLM Support if the version you require is not in our Downloads section). This will create a new empty database in the OpenLM Server\db directory. When the installer prompts for the license file, point to the new license file provided by OpenLM Support.

5. When installation is complete, go to Windows Services and stop the “OpenLM Server” service on the new machine.

6a. If using an embedded Firebird database, copy the OpenLM database from the old machine and overwrite it in place of the new, empty database on the new machine.

6b. If using an external database (MySQL, SQL Server, etc.), go to Windows Start → OpenLM → OpenLM Server DB Configuration and enter to the OpenLM database location, along with any required credentials then click Apply. You can also click Test beforehand to make sure that the connection is successful.

7. Start the “OpenLM Server” service on the new machine.

OpenLM Server migration to a new machine is now complete. All that remains is to configure any OpenLM peripheral components that you use to point to the new OpenLM Server machine (see section 3 below).

2. Migrating between machines, while upgrading from older OpenLM Server versions

1. Find out the hostname and MAC address of the new OpenLM Server machine. Send this information to support@openlm.com along with your current OpenLM Server version number and the version of OpenLM Server that you plan to install on the new machine. OpenLM Support will provide you with a new license file.

4. Download and install the desired OpenLM Server version on the new machine (contact OpenLM Support if the version you require is not in our Downloads section). This will create a new empty database in the OpenLM Server\db directory. When the installer prompts for the license file, point to the new license file provided by OpenLM Support.

5. When installation is complete on the new machine, go to Windows Services and stop the “OpenLM Server” service.

7. Upgrade the old database that you just copied. Go to Windows Start → OpenLM → OpenLM Server DB Upgrade Tool and follow the instructions.

8. Start the “OpenLM Server” service on the new machine.

OpenLM Server migration to a new machine with a new Server version is now complete. All that remains is to configure any OpenLM peripheral components that you use to point to the new OpenLM Server machine (see section 3 below).

Note: you will be able keep the old OpenLM Server machine operational while migrating to make sure that everything is fully functional.

3. Configuring OpenLM peripheral components

Once migration is complete, it is important to finish the process by updating the settings of any OpenLM peripheral components to point to the new OpenLM Server machine:

  • OpenLM Broker: configure any OpenLM Broker instances on the license server machines to point to the new OpenLM Server machine. Consult the parameters in the “Add an OpenLM Server” section of the OpenLM Broker configuration guide for additional instructions.
  • OpenLM Agent: configure any OpenLM Agents on your workstations to point to the new OpenLM Server machine by changing the “OpenLM Server” and “Port” fields in the Agent Configuration window. Consult the OpenLM Agent installation guide for additional instructions.
