On-Premise and Cloud-Based License Usage Reporting
OpenLM is a leading provider of software license monitoring, audit and management solutions and we provide a full cloud solution, in addition to on-premise installation. Software License Management Cloud is provided under a SaaS (software as a Service) model, enabling the quick and effortless deployment of the OpenLM license management system.
However, despite the general widespread move to cloud-based software in the enterprise and governmental organizations, customers are sometimes reluctant to leave the comfort zone of monitoring their licenses from within the organization’s network. This may be due to fear of not having direct access to the OpenLM database or of leaving control over this data to a service provider. Below we discuss the most common concerns, raised by our users.
Security is the main concern raised by customers on their way to implementing a cloud solution. OpenLM takes the measures below to keep your data secure:
1. Hosting Location: #
The Software License Management Cloud servers are hosted by a leading online service provider. They are maintained in a secured facility in which the highest levels of security standards apply, regarding physical access and network security.
2. Secure Data Transmission: #
All communication between the OpenLM Broker installed on the license server and the Software License Management Cloud server is conducted over HTTPS protocol: encrypted communication via SSL using 2048-bit certificates, as used by banking systems.
3. Database Isolation #
Taking security as a major concern we have designed the system not to use one central database for all customers. The Software License Management Cloud is implemented so that each customer populates a dedicated database. Each user relates to a specific account and can access the data from that account only.
4. In-application Security #
OpenLM is an enterprise-level tool that allows managing permissions for each individual that has access to the system. The OpenLM Role-Based Security enables administrators to determine which resources are to be made accessible for each group of users. Reports, charts, data items, and license servers employ granular viewing and management permissions.
More and more enterprise organizations and companies are already using the public cloud for critical applications such as email, ERP, CRM, and document management, data that is generally considered even more critical than license usage information.
What if we want to switch to on-premise in the future? #
No problem. You can get your private database at any point in time, and use it with an on-premise installation of OpenLM. The data belongs to you, and you are entitled to it on demand.
What if the internet connectivity is disrupted? Might I lose information? #
No. OpenLM will be able to report all your license activity. No information will be lost even if your network connection goes down for a few days.
Is the Cloud implementation limited? #
The cloud platform provides nearly all the capabilities of the on-premise OpenLM system. At this stage, it does not include LDAP synchronization capabilities, and Workstation Agent (Old Name->OpenLM Agent) – related capabilities.
