OpenLM Server Installation Guide – KB4414
The following document will provide instructions on how to install the OpenLM Server for your organization. Understanding the installation process will allow you to properly set up OpenLM, configure the initial steps required to activate the license and clarify any of the options presented by the OpenLM Server installer.
This installation guide covers:
NOTE: the screenshots in this guide show “OpenLM Trial”. If you already have a license present on your machine and are installing/upgrading/removing, the installer will reflect your license level in all the screens that follow. The steps for each procedure are the same regardless of your license type.
Installing the OpenLM Server
Before proceeding with the installation of OpenLM Server, please make sure that you meet the recommended system requirements. Also please note that while OpenLM can monitor both Windows and Unix / Linux resident systems, the OpenLM Server component can only be installed on a Windows machine.
To install the OpenLM Server:
1. Obtain the latest OpenLM Server installer (e.g. OpenLM_Server_5.#.##.##.exe) from our Downloads page
2. Once the download is complete, double-click the installer file to begin the install process (please note that your Antivirus software might take up to several minutes to scan the downloaded file)
3. The Windows User Account Control Process might prompt a screen asking “Do you want to allow the following software to make changes to your computer?” Click “Yes” to continue.
Once the installer has started, you should see the following screen:
The checkboxes are explained as follows:
- “Allow OpenLM to send updates and news emails” will ensure that you receive OpenLM news, updates as well as support webinars approximately once a week. This checkbox is mandatory if you’re installing the “Light” version of OpenLM, otherwise it is optional. You will receive the emails on the address that you will provide later on the “Activation” screen.
- “I agree to the license terms and conditions” is required in order for the installation to proceed.
- “Check for the latest version” will make the installer check and offer to download a newer version of OpenLM Server if available. Please note that this requires an active internet connection.
4. After you have read the license and agreed to the terms and conditions, click “Next”.
On the “Destination” screen you will be able to change the default install directory for the OpenLM Server. Click “Browse” to select a new location. We recommend leaving the default location as-is.
5. Once you have picked a destination directory, click “Install” for the process to begin.
Once installation has finished you will be presented with the “Activation” screen.
6. You will now be presented with two options for activating OpenLM:
A) Select “I don’t have OpenLM License File” if you are a new user and you want to evaluate the functionality of OpenLM Server for 30 days. You will need a working internet connection to the OpenLM License Server for this step to work.
The LED in the top right corner of the screen will indicate your connection status to the OpenLM License Server: green if there is a working connection and orange or red if there is a problem. It’s possible to activate OpenLM offline by following the instructions in the “Troubleshooting Installation Errors” section in this document
- Fill out the required fields (Company Name, First and Last Name and Email) and click “Next” to receive an activation code by email.
- Check your inbox for the code. You should have an email from email@example.com that looks like this:
- Either click the link in the email or copy & paste the code in the next screen and click “Finish”
If you haven’t received an email on the second try after clicking “Resend”, please contact our support by online chat or email at firstname.lastname@example.org as some mail servers may block our emails
B) If you already have an OpenLM license, pick the second option, click “Select File” to browse to where the *.lic file is located then click “Next” to proceed.
If the activation was successful, the main installation of OpenLM Server is now complete. You should see the following screen:
7. At this point you can close the installer, however we recommend that you get and install the OpenLM Broker component which provides additional functionality for your OpenLM Server such as:
- Denials monitoring
- Reading vendor license files
- Access and management (start/stop) of vendor license managers via the OpenLM interface
- And many other helpful add-on functions
If you have any questions, you can click on the “Chat With Support Engineers” button. This will open a browser window to our Support Messenger where you can ask our engineers any questions you might have about configuring or installing the OpenLM Server.
You can also proceed to configure OpenLM without installing the Broker component by clicking on the “Configure” button.
Installing the Broker component
If you have decided to install the Broker component, you will be presented with two options:
- If you are installing the Broker component but the current machine you are attempting to do so is not the license server, click “This is not my license server”. This will provide additional instructions on how to install the Broker.
- If the current machine is hosting the license manager, go ahead and click “I’m on the license server. Start installation”. This will open a separate installer window for the OpenLM Broker. For additional instructions, please consult our OpenLM Broker Installation Guide.
Configuring OpenLM without installing the Broker
If you have instead chosen to forgo installation of the Broker component, click “Configure” to open the OpenLM Server Configuration tool. You should also see a quick-start guide on how to connect to your existing license servers.
The OpenLM Server Configuration tool can also be accessed later through the Start Menu → OpenLM → OpenLM Server.
Troubleshooting Installation Problems
Connectivity Issues (Offline Mode)
The OpenLM Server installer will detect if there are any problems with the installation or activation procedure. Most of these problems occur due to internet connectivity issues.
If you’re trying to activate OpenLM Server but there is a problem with your connection to the OpenLM License Server (indicated by the orange or red LED in the top right corner of the installer), you will instead be presented with one of the “Offline Registration Mode” screens:
At this point there are two options. This should help you determine where the actual problem lies, as well as what you can do to solve it:
Option 1: Click the “Copy registration page link”. The link will be copied to your machine’s clipboard. Open a regular browser window, hit CTRL + V to paste and Enter to access the online license generator. If at this point, you still cannot access the link and follow the provided instructions, there is most likely an internet connection problem on your part. Make sure your internet connection is working or contact your system administrator for further assistance.
Option 2: It is possible to request your OpenLM Server license by email. Two buttons are provided. If your default system email software (Outlook for example) or browser is set to handle mailto: links, the “Send an Email” will open a default email template pre-filled with all the required details that need to be sent to our team for generating your license file. All you need to do is just send the email.
Otherwise please click “Get registration details” → “Copy Registration Details” and send the information to us at email@example.com
Free License Already Redeemed
If after completing the registration fields and clicking “Next” you receive this screen, then it means that you or someone else in your organization has already redeemed a trial license for the OpenLM Server.
In this case, please click on “Chat with OpenLM Sales Team” to open a browser window so we can assist you.
You can also “Send an Email” (if your system or browser is configured to handle “mailto:” links). This will create a template email with all the required details we need to help you solve the problem.
Otherwise, please click the “Get registration details” → “Copy Registration Details”. Then simply paste the license details in an email and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Upgrading an existing OpenLM Server installation
The steps to upgrade an existing OpenLM Server installation are as follows:
1. Obtain the latest OpenLM Server installer (e.g. OpenLM_Server_5.#.##.##.exe) from our Downloads page
2. Disable your antivirus software for the duration of the upgrade. If your organization’s security policy prohibits you from doing this, make sure to whitelist the firebird folder (typically located at C:\ProgramData\firebird) in your antivirus settings
3. Once the download is finished, double-click the installer file
4. The installer will automatically detect if a previous version of OpenLM is present. You should see the screen below:
It is important to follow the instructions and backup your database since the upgrade process is sensitive to hardware and software changes. Upgrading the OpenLM Server without backing up the database is risky and may compromise any accumulated data.
5. Open the Services window. Press Windows + R to open the “Run” dialog then type in services.msc and click “OK”.
6. Locate the “OpenLM Server” service, select it, then click on “Stop” in the upper left corner to stop the service. Once the service has stopped you can close the Services window.
7. Backup the database file indicated by the installer window (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenLM\OpenLM Server\db\OPENLM_DB.FDB) by copying it to a new location.
8. Click “Next”.
9. To continue with the upgrade process you must check the “I agree to the license terms and conditions” box. The “Check for the latest version” checkbox makes the installer check and offer to download a newer version of OpenLM Server if one is available (active internet connection required). Click “Install” to proceed.
10. Once the upgrade process has finished you should see the screen below. Click “Launch User Interface” to open OpenLM’s EasyAdmin user interface or [X] to safely close the installer window.
In case your OpenLM Server installation has been corrupted or has stopped working due to software or hardware malfunction, it is possible to repair your install.
To do so either:
- Double-click the installer executable file to run it
- Go to Control Panel → Programs and Features → Select “OpenLM Server” → Click “Uninstall/Change”.
You should see the following screen:
1. Select “Repair OpenLM” then click “Next” to proceed.
2. Once repair has finished you can either click “Launch User Interface” or close the window [X] to complete the process.
If at any time you wish to uninstall OpenLM Server, there are two ways to do so:
- Double-click (run) the installer executable
- Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Select “OpenLM Server” -> Click “Uninstall”
1. Select the “Uninstall OpenLM” option then click “Next”.
2. You will be prompted with a final confirmation dialog asking if you want to proceed. Click “Uninstall” to begin.
3. Once the uninstaller has finished, you should see the screen below. Click “Close” to complete the procedure.
Please note that the uninstaller leaves several user files and folders behind (located by default in C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenLM\). These contain your license, logs and database files. These will have to be removed manually for a full uninstall.
