OpenLM Deployment

OpenLM is deployed quickly and easily in your organization. All installation is done by you after downloading the software from the OpenLM website and our support staff will be available to help you every step of the way.

There are small variations in deployment strategy, depending of the functionality you are looking for. The main configurations are described and illustrated below:

OpenLM Standard Configuration

This is the recommended configuration for evaluation and for getting high ROI in the first months of usage. The standard configuration has served many of our customers well for years and given them all the engineering license monitoring, auditing and optimization functionality they need. Built-in advanced features and optional extensions can be added at any time.

What You Install

  1. Install a single instance of OpenLM on your own admin PC or any other suitable PC on your network
  2. Install an instance of OpenLM Broker on each of your license servers you want to monitor
  3. Perform a few simple configuration steps – we will guide you over the phone
  4. And that’s it!

How it Works

  1. OpenLM Broker gets license data from your license manager
  2. OpenLM Broker sends the raw data to OpenLM
  3. OpenLM Core processes the raw data it receives and stores it as inventory and usage information
  4. Administrator queries license inventory and usage information from anywhere on the network

OpenLM Advanced Configuration

Advanced configuration comprises everything in the standard configuration with a range of options for enhanced functionality in your software license monitoring, auditing, reporting and control activity. A key component is the OpenLM Agent, installed on your engineering users’ workstations, that gives them the information they need to know if a license is not currently available. Other components are the optional extensions such as OpenLM Directory Synchronization that synchronizes the list of users in OpenLM with that in MS Active directory and other directory formats, plus alerting, reporting and license server management functions.

  5. Users can query the availability of licenses including the location of checked out licenses
  6. User and OU information in OpenLM is updated from Active Directory domain at regular intervals.

OpenLM Cloud Configuration

OpenLM Cloud is simplest way of deploying OpenLM. All you need to install is a single component on your license server, which collects the raw data from the license manager and transmits it over a secure connection to OpenLM on the cloud. All the rest is done by us. You can login and access your inventory and license usage information anywhere, anytime.

OpenLM Restricted Configuration

This is a configuration used when it is not possible to install any components on your license server. It is also the configuration used for OpenLM Light. The restricted configuration has the advantage of a minimalistic presence in your network, but does not provide some of OpenLM’s most powerful features such as denials information, multiple license server monitoring and high availability. If your engineering license auditing requirements are basic, this configuration should suffice. However, it is strongly recommended to use the standard configuration wherever possible.
