Codemeter is the licensing product of the German company Wibu. Wibu specializes in hardware license managers, such as dongles. They are recognized in the market for their reliability and security. Although their main market is hardware-based, they are also expanding their software offering.

Who is Wibu?
Wibu is a German company that is celebrating its 30th year in 2019. Founded in 1989, by engineer Oliver Winzenried and software developer Marcellus Buchheit, Wibu specializes in software licensing and security. Wibu’s principal product is Codemeter, which is used by over 7000 independent software vendors globally, and which offers mainly flexible hardware and some software licensing solutions. Wibu customers include Agfa, Bosch, Rockwell and Wincor-Nixdorf.
Wibu is ranked highly by Frost and Sullivan in its annual review of software optimization vendors, outranked only by Gemalto and Flexera, with its closest rival being Reprise. The reputation of its devices and software as being reliable and resistant to piracy and cyberattacks is enhanced by proofs of the concept such as a week-long hackathon held in 2017, challenging hackers to see if anyone can crack their product with a €50 000 prize offered to the successful contestant. To date no one has succeeded, due in part to their “Blurry Box” cryptography, developed in conjunction with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the FZI Research Center, as well as their use of the AES 256-bit public encryption algorithm.
