Razorcat floating license server (FLS) management with OpenLM

Razorcat Development GmbH is a German company that develops specialized software testing tools and solutions. Their flagship product, TESSY, is a powerful tool for automated unit and integration testing of embedded software. For enterprise use, access to TESSY is controlled by the Razorcat Floating License Server (FLS).

OpenLM provides a comprehensive solution for interfacing with the Razorcat license manager. OpenLM Razorcat monitoring delivers real-time tracking, advanced reporting, and automation capabilities, enabling you to prevent license overuse and ensure continuous testing and development pipelines.

Understanding Razorcat licensing: Floating and permanent keys

Razorcat’s licensing model is designed for flexibility across different testing environments, including Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines.

What is Razorcat license manager?

The Razorcat License Manager is the comprehensive tool designed for managing floating licenses within software environments. It is primarily the Floating License Server (FLS), which can be installed standalone on both Windows and Linux servers. The FLS handles the request and registration of license keys for applications like TESSY and CTE (Classification Tree Editor).

Razorcat licensing schemas

Razorcat offers three main models for TESSY, focusing on network and dedicated access:

  • Floating license (Concurrent): Managed by the FLS, this allows multiple users to share a pool of licenses. At the same time, users may use TESSY as many times as the total licenses the FLS disposes over.
  • Node-locked license: This restricts the use of TESSY to the specific PC the license is issued for, without requiring a dongle.
  • Continuous integration (CI) license: A special floating license intended for TESSY when running in headless mode (without the graphical user interface) within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Permanent license key checkout: The FLS supports the checkout of Permanent License Keys for up to 30 days (by default) for use on remote hosts, allowing TESSY to be used on a PC not connected to any network.
  • Perpetual licenses: TESSY licenses are typically permanent (perpetual).

OpenLM's solution for Razorcat license monitoring and analytics

OpenLM is fully configured to monitor the Razorcat FLS by using the OpenLM Broker to run the flsutil.exe command-line utility. This process retrieves the current usage information from the server.
