Tracking offline license usage is one of the top challenges encountered by license administrators and asset managers. In scenarios where the end-user of an on-premise software experiences unstable internet connectivity or no connection at all, most license management solutions also stop recording license usage. However, the app keeps running and metering licenses.
With dSPACE license management, the issue goes to another level. In addition to using CodeMeter for its licensing, it enables end-users to borrow offline network licenses on their own for a maximum of 180 days. Once a license is borrowed from a dSPACE License Server to a dSPACE Borrow Container or a CmDongle, it becomes unavailable for other users until the borrower returns it or the borrowing period ends. This makes optimizing the license seemingly impossible, as there is no other way to reclaim unused licenses.
Not only that, but also such borrowings of dSPACE licenses leave no records for the license administrator, so you never know who has actually borrowed the license.

How to track dSPACE license usage: Monitor offline usage with OpenLMÂ
With the Annapurna release of OpenLM, monitoring offline usage of dSPACE or any other license is now not just possible, but a reality. Just install the OpenLM Workstation Agent on the end-user system. The agent will track license usage even when the system is offline and report it to the license server whenever it is connected to the internet.
Thus, for borrowed dSPACE licenses installed in offline workstations or CmDongles, license admins can track the license usage through the agent whenever the end users come online. In cases where a license has been idle for a long time, OpenLM can send alerts to the respective user to use or return the borrowed license, set via custom commands.
Notably, for effective dSPACE license management, these alerts are set by license admins, who decide on a threshold of idleness beyond which the user is to be notified.
Here, license admins cannot directly close or freeze the application as it is used offline. However, with OpenLM Annapurna, IT administrators can identify inactive or idle users and take appropriate actions to prevent further wastage.
