Bord na Móna, Ireland

“We have been using OpenLM license management software for many years with great success. It allows one click access to see all available licenses. It also enables disconnection of unused licenses and more importantly for us it has a customizlogoable reporting function to audit licence use. It is not expensive and the technical support is excellent.”

Mark Murphy, GIS Manager

Manatee County Government, Florida

MCG Logo ColorManatee County first purchased and implemented OpenLM in 2010.  At the time we were struggling with the management of our concurrent license pool for our ESRI ArcGIS Desktop products.  OpenLM not only lived up to its’ expectations as far as managing the license pool it also filled a void in reporting on license usage.  Prior to OpenLM we were basically flying blind, and the only way we knew we had licensing issues was when our users started getting denial of licenses and even then we couldn’t see what was really going on.  OpenLM allowed us to be more pro-active in monitoring license usage, we could see when perhaps a user had toggled on ArcINFO when perhaps they only needed ArcView.  Additionally when we did have licensing issues OpenLM provided the back up data to support justifications to purchase more licensing, now I had charts and graphs to support our case for expanding the pool.

OpenLM has also helped us achieve a higher level of usage efficiencies out of the licenses we do have through its ability to save and close sessions that have become inactive.  We are currently and comfortably supporting an ESRI versioned editing environment of 33 active editors with a pool of 26 ArcINFO licenses.  As far as bang for the buck, OpenLM is the best 3rd party product we’ve implemented to support our ESRI ArcGIS Desktop environment.”

“We have been using OpenLM now for a couple of years and have found it to be very easy to install, maintain and administer.

It has enabled us to aggregate and track usage for the dozens of network licenses hosted on multiple servers onto one very thoughtfully designed, at-a-glance web interface.

OpenLM is also the best product we have found for really drilling down to usage of individual features within a product such as MATLAB toolboxes, which other products that only track program executables are unable to do.

Above all, the OpenLM team have always been conscientious and ready to accommodate and support our software asset management requirements, therefore I wholly recommend this product.”

Chad Qualley, CAD Manager/ Survey Technical Coordinator

Houston Engineering, Inc., USA

“Our firm has six offices across two states, so it’s easy to imagine that managing software licenses between all six locations proved time-consuming and inefficient. About two years ago, I purchased OpenLM to help get the most out of our license pool for ArcGIS and Civil 3D. With a limited number of licenses, we didn’t want to leave any unused. The software wasn’t difficult to set up, and, more importantly, it worked! We saw results immediately after implementing the program. We also found OpenLM’s reporting tool provides an unforeseen benefit by making it easy to see if or when we need to purchase additional licenses.
With our company continuing to grow, I know that there will be even more licenses to manage in the future. And OpenLM will be the tool we use to manage those licenses.”

Søren Steen Andersen, GIS Systems Administrator

“Since 2011 we have used OpenLM to help us managing the licenses. Where more than a certain number of the licenses are occupied, OpenLM will close the inactive ArcGIS clients and release them back into the pool.

For some special products we only have  one license, and here is another advantage of using OpenLM. The users can look into the OpenLM client and see who uses a specific license. OpenLM helps us saving licenses.

With more than 400 ArcGIS desktop users located over various office locations we have a challenge managing our ArcGIS licences.

Many users meet in the office early in the morning to plan their workday. When they leave the office, they forget to release the GIS license, and the licence is occupied all day.

Since we have only a limited number of licenses, we get complaints by other users that they can’t access the desired licenses. We are able to configure OpenLM to suite our needs for managing our ArcGIS licenses.

Once a year we use OpenLM to create a statistical report to see the distribution of licenses. The different departments in our organization must pay a license fee based on how much time they have used the different products.

The reports created with OpenLM help us generate statistics about the license activity. We use them as the basis for generating invoices to the various departments for their use. The OpenLM server is connected with our Active Directory and gives us the necessary information about who uses the different licenses. The reports also give us daily information about the license usage.”

David Brandt, GIS Manager

Washington County, Minnesota
“Before implementing OpenLM, I would routinely receive complaints that all the GIS licenses were in use. OpenLM helped me identify which licenses were underused and where I needed more licenses to mwashington countyeet the need. Having metrics on GIS license use was instrumental in achieving the proper balance of licenses. I was able to justify upgrades to some licenses and retirement of others. OpenLM has paid for itself within the first year of use and helped me save the county money through efficient use of licenses.”

Sebastian Block, UK Senior GIS Consultant

WSP Group, Englandwsp
“With an ever increasing user base spread across multiple office locations, the administration of ArcGIS Desktop licences is a challenging task. Prior to the adoption of OpenLM there would be the inevitable round of daily emails asking whether a licence could be released due to lack of availability.  From an administration perspective, it was difficult to establish how effectively licences were being utilised and plan for future growth as we had limited reporting capability.

OpenLM enabled WSP to solve these problems by providing a mechanism to release inactive licences and providing detailed usage data ranging from licence activity to licence denials and much more besides.  The service from OpenLM’s technical support department is first class, not only in terms of speed of response but also knowledge of the product.  It is evident they have a genuine customer focus.”

“We bought OpenLM to monitor the use of our Autodesk and Esri Arcgis floating licenses. Since installing OpenLM we now know exactly who, when, how long and what everybody is using.

We soon discovered the discrepancy between the presumed and effective use of the software. Now we know for sure we don’t need to buy more licenses thus saving us a lot of money. From this moment on we also can take educated decisions on organizational changes concerning the use of the software.

Why had we not purchased OpenLM sooner?”

Jorge Cunha, License Manager,

University of Porto, PortugalPorto

Work day morning. IT department received a complaint about Matlab licenses not being available and was asked to explain what happened.

Openlm proved to be a precious tool! With few clicks we were able to create a report on what happened and illustrate it with graphics. Even more, if the users wanted to see who was using matlab, and what features were active, it provided an online web tool that could be queried on demand, by the inquiry user, enabling them to get data by the minute.scavenging flexlm logs, building reports by hand and filtering the data so it would make sense.

The work stress was lifted from our shoulders and the users got the information they were looking for, and more.

Since We started using OpenLM We now have access to numbers, statistics and reliable information to make decisions, analyze problems and conflicts with licenses on campus. The software is intuitive and works beautifully. Installation and upgrades are a breeze.
With a simple Web Browser We can monitor license activity and take action when problems occur.

Thumbs up for OpenLM!

Daniel Avramov, GIS Team Lead

Environment Canada, Canadaimage04

“OpenLM is the most important tool in the management of Environment Canada’s geospatial software assets. Over the past several years, Environment Canada has been working towards better coordination of the Department’s geospatial tool. OpenLM has given us the power to identify and optimize the Department’s investments and is instrumental in the decision making process for the purchase and maintenance of geospatial software. Now, instead of independently investing in duplicative and costly licenses, we have been able to consolidate and save time, resources and money. OpenLM staff are knowledgeable and friendly and most importantly know the value of client service. They went the extra mile to get their software configured on our infrastructure well before we ever committed to purchasing the software. The software is well designed, very easy to use and the summaries and statistics it provides far exceeds any other software management tool that we evaluated. OpenLM is extremely affordable and the cost saving it provided in licenses has made it pay for itself many time over. Thank you OpenLM team for your incredible product.”

Kory Krofft, CAD Administrator,

Trimble Navigation Ltd, USAtrimble_logo

“Trimble Navigation Ltd. Is a Silicon Valley based technology company with a wide product range whose core technology leverages the many applications for Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Customer solutions range from controlling earthmoving equipment and precision agriculture to fleet management and surveying.

Trimble’s engineering staff includes roughly 95 CAD system users whose CAD tools are licensed through a FlexLM floating license manager. It has been a long term struggle to properly allocate the costs associated with the CAD system tools such as new licenses and maintenance fees for existing seats to the proper departments.

Initially, OpenLM was investigated as a tool to track license usage so that the costs can be allocated to the specific groups within Trimble based on actual usage of the licenses provided. OpenLm’s “Groups” feature and reporting tools make this task as simple as constructing the report description. The output clearly displays the hours that each department is responsible for, making the allocation of costs simple and equitable.

In addition to the reporting capabilities, Open LM’s license monitoring allows CAD administration to easily see the status of multiple license servers and to remotely release hung licenses.

These capabilities have made administering the licenses a snap.”

Dirk Linnemüller, GIS Manager

Landkreis Osnabrück, Germanyimage02

“As a GIS manager in a public administration I was again and again confronted with the same questions from groups with very different interests. The GIS-users asked for more GIS-licenses, the financial accounting urged me to save money in the GIS-business. With the installation of OpenLM software these questions are history. We use

our licenses much more effective and were confirmed in our guess, that some users opened GIS-software when they started working and keep the license the whole day, just to have it ready if they need. Now licenses are freed up after 20 minutes when a license usage of 80% is reached and everything works fine. The financial accounting I can apply with statistics from OpenLM about the usage of licenses to show the importance of GIS-software. OpenLM is exactly the software we were looking for. Thanks to the OpenLM team for a great piece of software.”

Craig Robson

JBA Consulting, Englandimage03

“As for our thoughts on OpenLM, I can honestly say we are extremely pleased with it. Before we used OpenLM there were always broadcast emails being sent around the company asking ‘can anyone free up an ArcGIS licence’ – these stopped almost immediately when we installed OpenLM. We always suspected that people were ‘hogging’ licences (i.e. loading ArcGIS when they first got into the office in the morning because they wanted to use it later and feared they wouldn’t be able to get a licence), so we widely publicised the fact that licences would now be freed up after 15 minutes of inactivity. ..As you can see, after several months of use we don’t have any real problems. OpenLM is very straightforward to administer and works very well in the background without interfering with the users’ way of working. All in all, we’re extremely glad we stumbled upon your website!! Congratulations on an excellent product.”

Clara Alonso Fernández-Coppel,image06

GIS manager, Tragsatec, Spain

“With more than 800 seats of potential users for ArcGIS, we were really worried about the  amount of licenses we will need to buy to cover our needs. People argue that they cannot finish their work when there’s not enough license available, so we received a lot of pressure to buy more licenses. We suspected that in most cases, licenses were captive but not being used. Until we bought OpenLM we couldn’t be sure that we were right.

Now we have delayed our purchases of licenses until we get real data for the need of buying them.

At the beginning, people get a bit annoyed when they loose their licenses, but they see the benefit of it pretty soon.

We have received a great support from people at OpenLM: quick, effective and friendly. It has been a pleasure to work hand in hand with them. We got help right from the beginning when we were merely testing the software.”
