Innovyze (InfoWorks) license management with OpenLM

Innovyze (now part of Autodesk, but often using legacy managers) provides the standard software for water distribution and wastewater modeling, such as InfoWorks ICM and InfoWater.

These are high-value, computationally intense tools. A single “run” can take hours, making the distinction between “active simulation” and “idle software” financially critical.

OpenLM helps water utilities and civil engineering firms maximize the availability of these expensive hydraulic modeling seats.

What is Innovyze License Manager: An introduction

Innovyze License Administrator (ILA) is the centralized utility for managing entitlements for Innovyze water infrastructure products like InfoWorks ICM, InfoWater, and InfoAsset. It has largely replaced the legacy “Innovyze Floating License Server” and hardware dongles with a “soft” licensing model powered by Thales (Sentinel RMS) technology. Users activate licenses by entering an Entitlement ID (EID), which validates against a cloud server to authorize both standalone and network (floating) seats.

Licensing schemas of Innovyze

Innovyze tools have historically used Thales (Sentinel) or proprietary floating managers, though many are migrating to Autodesk IDs.

  • Long simulation times: Hydraulic models take hours to run. Users often start a run and leave for the day. Determining if a license is “in use” or just “open” after the run finishes is the primary challenge.
  • Limited token/seat pools: Engineering firms often share a small pool of InfoWorks licenses across multiple offices. “Hoarding” behaviors are rampant as engineers fear losing access during critical project phases.
  • Version control: Different projects require different versions of the solver. Managing license compatibility across versions is complex.

OpenLM’s solution for Innovyze optimization

OpenLM monitors the license manager to provide transparency into hydraulic modeling workflows, ensuring seats are used for solving, not sitting.

OpenLM capability Value for Innovyze licenses
Simulation monitoring Differentiate between a user configuring a model (interactive) and the software running a calculation (intensive). This helps in sizing hardware and license needs.
Idle time reclamation If an engineer leaves InfoWorks open after a simulation completes, OpenLM can detect the drop in resource usage and harvest the license for others.
Project-based chargeback Water infrastructure projects operate on tight budgets. OpenLM allows you to charge license costs directly to the specific municipal project using the software.
Global license sharing For firms with global offices, OpenLM helps manage “Follow-the-Sun” policies, ensuring licenses move from London to New York as the work day shifts.

OpenLM advantage for Innovyze monitoring

Legacy and future proof: Whether you are on the legacy Sentinel-based Innovyze manager or migrating to Autodesk licensing, OpenLM supports both, bridging the transition gap.

Resource tracking: Correlate license usage with CPU/RAM usage to ensure that high-performance modeling workstations are being utilized effectively.
