ProSim license management and optimization with OpenLM

ProSim (from Fives ProSim) is a specialized process simulation software suite used across high-stakes industries like chemical, petrochemical, refining, and energy. Tools like ProSimPlus are critical for steady-state process simulation, optimization, and energy management. The ProSim License Manager is the dedicated system controlling access to these high-value tools.

OpenLM provides a solution for monitoring the ProSim License Manager, transforming server log data into actionable business intelligence. OpenLM ProSim monitoring ensures you gain the necessary visibility to control costs, plan renewals, and ensure your engineering teams always have access to their simulation licenses.

Understanding ProSim licensing: Concurrent and borrowable

ProSim utilizes a proprietary license manager to distribute and track licenses, focusing on flexible access for enterprise users.

What is ProSim license manager?

The ProSim License Manager is the integrated licensing system used across most ProSim software. Its primary function is to authorize or deny the right to use the protected software based on the installed license file.

ProSim licensing schemas

ProSim provides license models tailored for both individual and networked corporate environments:

  • Network license (Client/Server): This model allows a license to be shared among several users through a network (LAN or WAN).
    • The software is installed on an unlimited number of computers, but the license, installed on a server, manages a pre-defined number of simultaneous accesses.
  • Local license (Standalone): A license that allows the utilization of the software on a unique computer.
  • Borrowable licenses: The network license can be “Borrowable”. The borrowing function creates a temporary license for a specific user on a specific computer, allowing the software to be used without being connected to the server. Borrowing a license reduces the number of possible simultaneous accesses on the network license by one unit.
  • Trial license: A temporary license that is installed automatically with the software and can be installed only once on the same computer.
  • Perpetual/Subscription: Licenses for non-commercial home use typically grant a perpetual, non-exclusive usage right to use the software on a single machine. Commercial licenses often involve subscriptions and paid software updates after the first year.

OpenLM’s solution for ProSim license monitoring and analytics

OpenLM provides a centralized mechanism for monitoring the ProSim License Manager. This is achieved using the OpenLM Broker installed on the license server machine, which retrieves usage data and compiles reports for the OpenLM Platform.

OpenLM capability Value for ProSim licenses Supported by OpenLM
Real-time usage monitoring Tracks usage activity with high-resolution reporting, available by seconds. Yes
License totals Reports the total number of licenses owned and available in the pool. Yes
Expiration date reporting Track when your ProSim licenses are due to expire, allowing for proactive renewal planning. Yes
License usage / Denials / Borrowing OpenLM’s current documented integration with ProSim does not directly support tracking License Usage (who is using), Denials, or Borrowing reports. No
Remote administrative actions Using the Broker enables the ability to remotely start and stop the ProSim license manager service. Yes
Multiple server redundancy OpenLM does not currently support monitoring ProSim’s multiple server redundancy schemes. No

The OpenLM advantage for ProSim license manager

OpenLM ensures your investment in ProSim’s critical process simulation software is continuously monitored, providing IT and engineering management with essential metrics.

  • High-resolution data: With usage tracked per second, OpenLM provides highly granular temporal data on license availability and consumption, crucial for environments running intensive simulations.
  • Proactive renewal planning: Reliable reporting on License Totals and Expiration Dates prevents unexpected license lapses and informs renewal negotiation strategies.
  • Broker reliability: The use of OpenLM Broker ensures stable and buffered communication with the ProSim server, maintaining data integrity during network fluctuations.
  • Unified SAM: Centralize the monitoring of the ProSim License Manager with over 90 other supported license managers in one intuitive platform.
