Sentinel SuperPro license management with OpenLM

Sentinel SuperPro, a predecessor to Sentinel HL, is a historically leading anti-piracy and license management solution. It provides robust security and flexible licensing through its programmable hardware keys (dongles). Many specialized engineering and vertical market software applications continue to rely on the Sentinel SuperPro License Manager (SuperProNet) for network control.

OpenLM provides a solution for monitoring Sentinel SuperPro usage and retrieving statistics from the license server. OpenLM Sentinel SuperPro monitoring ensures that your most securely protected, high-value software assets are tracked efficiently, maximizing availability and ensuring compliance.

Understanding Sentinel SuperPro licensing: Hardware-enforced network access

Sentinel SuperPro’s strength lies in its use of a physical hardware key to securely protect software.

What is Sentinel SuperPro license manager?

The Sentinel SuperPro License Manager refers to the system, including the software driver and the Sentinel SuperProNet component, which manages network licenses. The security keys were designed for customized security and licensing management.

Sentinel SuperPro licensing schemas

SuperPro supports diverse license models and deployment options:

  • Hardware keys (Dongles): Licenses are contained in physical USB or Parallel Port hardware keys. These keys secure applications running on multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, and Macintosh.
  • Concurrent network licensing (SuperProNet): The network version of Sentinel SuperPro protects client-server applications and provides server monitoring to track license usage on the network. It supports network communications over TCP/IP, IPX, and NetBEUI.
  • Trial/Demo licensing: The SuperPro Shell technology can be customized to support trial versions through time limits and expiration date support.
  • Feature-based licensing: SuperPro supports customized security and licensing management for various models, including pay-per-use and feature-based licenses.
  • Software keys: Later versions of SuperPro also supported software keys in network mode, utilizing the Sentinel Protection Server.

Note: Sentinel SuperPro has been succeeded by the Sentinel HL product family, which is fully backwards compatible and offers a simpler migration path to the modern Sentinel LDK solution.

OpenLM's solution for Sentinel SuperPro license monitoring and analytics

OpenLM provides essential monitoring capabilities for the Sentinel SuperPro License Manager by interfacing with the server’s tracking mechanisms. This provides visibility into this traditionally difficult-to-track hardware-based license pool.

OpenLM capability Value for Sentinel SuperPro licenses Supported by OpenLM
License inventory Provides reporting on the total number of licenses owned and features available. Yes
Real-time usage monitoring Tracks license usage activity on the network, supporting monitoring to track license usage. Yes
Idle session detection and harvesting OpenLM can identify idle applications and automatically close them (harvesting) to maximize the availability of concurrent licenses. Yes
Denials reporting OpenLM provides advanced reporting on license denial events. Yes
Remote administrative actions OpenLM provides capabilities for remote management of the license manager service. Yes
Borrowed/Detached licenses OpenLM’s current documented integration with Sentinel SuperPro does not directly support tracking borrowed licenses. No

The OpenLM advantage for Sentinel SuperPro licenses

OpenLM is the necessary tool for providing a modern visibility layer over your legacy Sentinel SuperPro deployment, optimizing usage and supporting your eventual migration to modern platforms.

  • Maximize availability: Through idle session detection and harvesting, OpenLM ensures that licenses are available to your engineering teams when they need them, preventing downtime caused by unnecessarily checked-out licenses.
  • Risk mitigation: Monitoring the usage of applications protected by hardware keys helps mitigate the risks associated with the high cost and single point of failure inherent in physical dongles.
  • Unified SAM: Centralize the monitoring of the Sentinel SuperPro License Manager alongside your modern Sentinel HL, Sentinel LDK, and all other supported license managers in a single, intuitive platform.
  • Data-driven renewals: Tracking actual license consumption helps make data-driven decisions to reduce wastage and optimize spending on renewals.
